Day 18

Psychoanalysis:
  1. At their purest intention, why do directors make films?
  2. Besides entertainment, why do we watch films?
  3. Freud’s “uncanny” is defined as “that class of the frightening which leads back to what is known of old and long familiar.”--What does this mean?  Can you give an example?
  4. Archetypes--Jung argues that there are 12 main archetypes that we understand unconsciously and they are used over and over in film.  Why do we like seeing the same characters over and over again?
    1. Example: young, innocent, orphan goes on an adventure to defeat evil
      1. Frodo, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker
    1. Wise, mystic guide with special powers dies on the journey, forcing the hero to make decisions on his own
      1. Gandalf, Dumbledore, Obi-Wan Kanobie

  1. Due Friday: Discussion Leader Reading
  2. Due Monday:
    1. Homework: Read--https://people.ucsc.edu/~vktonay/migrated/psyc179d/Psychoanalyse.pdf

Peer review:

  1. Read your paper aloud to your partner while the partner takes notes.
  2. After the reading, the listener will explain the following:
    1. What is the goal of the writer?
    2. Why is this topic important (according to the writer)
    3. How is the writer going to fulfill the goal? (sources, comparison, close analysis of one film...?)
    4. Does the topic need to be narrowed?  If so, how?
    5. Can the goal be accomplished? (i.e. will it need a textbook-length paper to answer or does it span too much time or too many cultures or is it speculative?)
  3. After the listener has reported, the writer can ask questions but not clarify or lecture on anything.
    1. Example: "What I meant was..." is not appropriate but "What made you think my intention was..." is.
  4. Then switch.
If extra time: write a paragraph using the Point, Example, Explanation guide using an example from your paper/topic or from Happy Feet.  Practice expanding the Example and making it detailed and clear.
